The Pythagorean Theorem

Shown below is a diagram of the pythagoream theorem. In this lesson we will learn about the pythagoream theorem, and how to use it to find dimensions of triangles.

USING THE PYHTAGOREAN THEOREM:

1. The first step in using the pythagorean theorem is to identify the information given. Are you given the dimensions of 2 legs, or are you given the demensions of a leg, and the hypotenuse? The sides labelled a, and b are the legs of the triangle, whereas the side labelled as c is the hypotenuse of the triangle.

2. The second step is to plug in the information given, and solve for the missing variable.

EXAMPLE 1:

If a window pane has a length of 2 feet, and the width of 3 feet. What is the diagonal length of the window pane in feet?

According to the pythagorean theorem the sum of the areas of the red, and green squares should be equivalent to the area of the large blue square.

In other words a^2 + b^2 = c^2

The pythagorean theorem is used to find a missing dimension of a triangle. Given any two sides of a right anged triangle we can find the third side by using the pythagorean theorem.

PARTS OF A RIGHT ANGLED TRIANGLE

1. The first step is to identify the information given. From the information we can identify that we are give the dimensions of the two legs of the triangle. The width of the triangle is 2 ft., and the height is 3 ft. We need to solve for the hypotenuse of diagonal of the triangle.

2. The next step is to plug in the revalent variables into the the formula, and solve for the missing side.
